Extractions

An extraction is a removal of a tooth from its socket in the bone.

There are many different reasons for teeth needing to be extracted.  The most common reason for extracting a tooth is due to decay or fracture.  The dentist will try to repair or restore the tooth with either a filling or crown; however, if the damage is too extensive the tooth may need to be extracted.  Other reasons for extractions include: orthodontic treatment, having extra teeth and needing room for teeth coming in, certain diseases or illnesses, trauma, and wisdom teeth.

To keep you comfortable your doctor will give you local anesthetic in the extraction area.  For extra comfort he may use nitrous oxide (laughing gas) or oral sedation.  In more difficult cases or for extremely anxious patients, he may need to refer you to the oral surgeon who has the ability to extract the teeth under general anethesia (putting you to sleep) or IV sedation.

In most cases Dr. Koehl and Dr. Hall can remove the teeth, including 3rd molars (wisdom teeth), in office.
